What is an interactive floor plan?

An interactive floor plan is a venue map inside an event app that attendees can tap and search, showing stands, rooms and facilities in their actual positions.

interactive floor plan in detail

Also written as venue map, event map, wayfinding map.

An interactive floor plan turns a venue’s printed map into something searchable. Tap a stand to see who is on it, search for a company to find where it is, tap a room to see what is on there next.

In practice at an event

The value scales with venue complexity. At a single-corridor conference with four rooms, signage and room names do the job and a map adds little. At a multi-hall trade show with four hundred stands, a map is how anybody finds anything.

The maintenance is the hidden cost. A floor plan is only useful while it is accurate, and stand allocations move up to the day before. A map showing last month’s layout is worse than no map, because attendees trust it.

What to look for

If you do need one, ask who builds it and who updates it, and what the turnaround is for a change. Ask whether stands link to exhibitor records so a search returns a company rather than a number.

If you do not need one, do not let it drive a purchase. It appears on nearly every feature matrix in this category, which means it gets scored even at events that would never open it.

Where event67 stands

event67 does not have interactive floor plans, venue maps or wayfinding. It is a stated exclusion, and it is the feature most likely to appear as a gap when event67 is scored against a general roundup.

The practical mitigation for a conference: room names in the app match the venue’s own signage exactly, so attendees navigate by the door rather than by a data model. For a large exhibition hall that is not sufficient, and a map product is a separate purchase.
