What is a session track?
A track is a themed strand of sessions running in parallel with other strands through a conference, letting an attendee follow one subject through the day.
session track in detail
Also written as stream, strand.
A track is a themed strand of sessions. A conference with three tracks runs three sessions at once, each aimed at a different part of the audience, and an attendee picks one to follow or mixes across them.
In practice at an event
Tracks do three jobs. They let a broad audience each find a relevant day. They make the programme legible, because “the security track” tells somebody more than a list of forty titles. And they help the organizer size rooms, because the track a session belongs to predicts its likely attendance.
They also cost something. Every additional track is another room, another moderator, another set of changeovers, and it fragments the shared experience that makes hallway conversation easy.
What to look for
In an app, tracks should be a filter on the schedule and a visible label on every session — a colour alone is not enough, because colour-coding excludes some attendees and means nothing on a printed badge.
Organizers should also check that a session can belong to a track without being locked to a room, since track and room diverge as soon as one session needs a bigger space.
When you name tracks, name them after what the attendee wants rather than after your internal structure. “Getting to production” tells somebody whether to be in the room; “Track B” and “Platform” do not, and both appear on real conference programmes every year.
How event67 handles it
The schedule is day-by-day and filterable by track, with each session carrying its track, its room and its speakers. Tracks appear as labels rather than as colour alone. Because the schedule is live, moving a session between tracks or rooms during the event updates every attendee’s view, including anyone who saved it to their personal agenda.
