What is abstract management?

Abstract management is the workflow for collecting research abstracts, routing them to reviewers, scoring them, and turning the accepted ones into a conference programme.

abstract management in detail

Also written as abstract submission, submission management.

Abstract management is the specialised half of conference programming that academic, medical and scientific societies depend on. It is a genuine software category, not a feature.

In practice at an event

A society opens submissions with a structured form: title, authors and affiliations, category, the abstract itself under a word limit, sometimes figures and conflict-of-interest declarations. Submissions are then routed to reviewers by topic, blinded or not, scored against a rubric, and discussed by a committee.

Accepted abstracts become oral presentations or posters, which then need scheduling into sessions, rooms and poster boards, and publishing in a book of abstracts that itself often needs a citable identifier.

The volume is what makes it hard. A mid-size medical society can receive several thousand abstracts against a few hundred slots, with hundreds of volunteer reviewers.

What to look for

If you need this, it is a primary requirement rather than a nice-to-have, and it should be the first filter on your vendor list. Check reviewer assignment rules, conflict-of-interest handling, blinding, multi-round review, and the export into whatever produces your programme and your abstract book.

Do not assume an event app includes it because it lists “speaker management”. Those are different things.

Where event67 stands

event67 does not do abstract management, and does not do call for papers or peer review either. Sessions and speakers are entered in the organizer console once decisions have been made elsewhere. For a society whose annual meeting runs on abstracts, event67 can carry the resulting programme and the attendee experience, but the submission and review workflow must come from a specialist product.
