What is event ROI?

Event ROI is the value an organization gets back from an event relative to what it cost, measured against the outcome the event was actually run to produce.

event ROI in detail

Also written as return on event, event return on investment.

Event ROI is a simple idea that is usually measured badly, because a single formula gets applied to four kinds of event that have four different purposes.

In practice at an event

A revenue event is selling something. Measure pipeline influenced and closed, over a window fixed in advance. Setting the window afterwards is how attribution becomes storytelling.

A member or community event is retaining people. Measure renewal rate among attendees against non-attendees. This comparison is the strongest ROI evidence available to any association, and it is rarely run.

An internal event is changing behaviour. Measure the behaviour, at thirty and ninety days. If the kickoff was about a new methodology, measure adoption of the methodology.

A brand event has weak measurable outcomes and should say so. Repeat attendance and recommendation are the least-bad proxies. A clearly stated qualitative case survives scrutiny better than a manufactured revenue number.

What to look for

Decide the formula before the event, not after. An ROI number chosen once the results are in is an argument, not a measurement.

On the cost side, the honest denominator is total cost including staff time, not just invoices. On the return side, be careful with anything that would have happened anyway.

How event67 handles it

event67 contributes the behavioural half: session attendance, question participation, connections made, session ratings and check-in data, live during the event and archived after. It does not calculate ROI for you and does not claim to, because the formula depends on why you ran the event and no software knows that. What it does make simple is the cost side of the ratio: a published per-attendee price with a hard ceiling, so the denominator is knowable before the event rather than after.
