What is activation rate?
Activation rate is the proportion of invited or expected attendees who claimed their invitation and opened the event app, expressed as a percentage.
activation rate in detail
Also written as app adoption rate.
Activation rate is activated attendees divided by a denominator you choose — usually people invited, or people expected onsite. The denominator matters more than the number, which is why the definition should be written down once and never quietly changed.
In practice at an event
The rate moves in a predictable shape. A first wave arrives when invitations are sent, roughly a week before. A second, larger wave arrives at the registration desk on the first morning. After lunch on day one it is close to final.
Watching it hourly on that first morning is the most useful thing an organizer can do with an analytics screen, because a stall is diagnosable while there is still time. If the rate is flat while people are visibly arriving, the problem is almost always the desk — nobody is helping people install — or the invitation, which may have bounced or landed in a spam folder.
What to look for
Published benchmarks for this metric are not comparable across vendors, because products count different things. Some count downloads, some count logins, some count any session with a page view. A number quoted without its definition is not evidence.
Measure your own, define the denominator once, and compare it to your own previous event. A trend against yourself is worth more than a benchmark against a definition you cannot see.
How event67 handles it
Activation is the same event that drives billing, so the number in the analytics screen and the number on the invoice are the same number. There is no separate marketing definition. Engagement analytics run live during the event alongside a live arrivals count against the guest list, which is what makes a first-morning stall visible while it can still be fixed.
