What is offline mode in an event app?

Offline mode covers what an app does when the network is not there. It appears in most event app RFPs because venue connectivity genuinely fails, and it fails at predictable moments.

In practice at an event

Two moments matter. The check-in desk at 08:30, with four hundred people arriving and every one of them joining the venue Wi-Fi at the same time. And the exhibition hall, where dense crowds and metal structures defeat both Wi-Fi and cellular.

The attendee-facing case is weaker than it sounds. An attendee whose phone has no signal usually still has the schedule cached from the last time they looked, and the features that genuinely need connectivity — live Q&A, polls, notifications — are meaningless offline by definition.

What to look for

Be specific about which operation you mean. Offline schedule viewing, offline check-in scanning and offline lead capture are three different capabilities and a product may have one without the others.

For check-in, ask what happens to scans captured offline: are they queued and reconciled, and what happens if two desks scan the same person while both are offline?

Where event67 stands

The practical mitigation is the one every event should take regardless: test on cellular data rather than venue Wi-Fi before the event, and have a printed guest list at the desk as a fallback. If offline check-in is a hard requirement — a remote venue, a hall with known dead zones — score it as absent.
